Our next class will be November 8. Cant wait to see you there!!Oliver Button is a sissy
When I was a little girl I loved watching Barney. One of my favorite episodes was when Tomie dePaola was on. I only remember his drawing, but this was probably 20 years ago and it still is something that I think of often. I never really grew up with reading his stories, but I have always loved his illustrations.
In my student teaching class we have been reading several of his books. I began to love him so I purchased several of his books. Today I read Oliver Button is a Sissy. This is a book that I have learned a lot about, but I had not read it. This was a great story. It is a story of Oliver Button who wasn’t like typical boys. He preferred to take walks, jump rope, and dance.
In my second semester in the school of education we read Reading with meaning by Debbie Miller.
She talked about Oliver Button all through her book and how she used in in her classroom. She talks about reading the book for the following reasons…
- to build trust in the classroom
- as a read aloud
- looking for deeper meaning
- building schema
- character connections
- using as a classroom book club
I love the thought of having this book for so many fun reasons. It is a book that I now see as a must have for my collection and for any classroom collection.
I have been on fall break for two weeks now and get to go back and see my firsties on Monday! I am so excited. Are you on fall break? What have you been doing? Do you love Tomie dePaola? Let me know! I would love so much to hear from you.
Ms. Cara
